Camper or caravan - we had to decide

Since 1999 we have been on camping holidays with caravans. When we went on vacation to France in 2018, an older camper with very nice Dutch people was parked next to us. It kind of infected us.

The Camper, an Adriatec 590 DS, was already 17 years old at the time and already had 211,000 km on the clock. It was already clear to us when we bought the vehicle that there was still a lot to do with the vehicle. But the basic substance was fine. Later we heard from all sides that the Fiat 2.8l JTD diesel should be very durable.

And indeed, the camper drives us well - now. Because we had to repair, improve or replace some things.

For a year we had both a caravan and a camper because we couldn't decide quickly which would be more suitable for us.

Probably because we are so used to it from caravans over the years, we prefer to use campsites than parking spaces. One of the advantages of the camper is clearly driving onto the site, turning off the engine and plugging in the electricity. That's it. This camper doesn't need any supports, so you're ready to go on holiday with the motor straight away. This is especially true for short overnight stays. Whether traveling or staying with friends.

Another advantage is driving, it's easier than with the caravan and car combination, I think the length (trailer combination 12m, camper 6m) on serpentines, 12% incline, turning with a trailer combination, etc.

The disadvantage is that the camper has no air conditioning, in summer it gets warm. A car is usually better equipped. However, it was always the case with us with the caravan that the car had to be of a suitable size in order to be able and allowed to tow the caravan. Today, in addition to the camper, a smaller car is sufficient, which is completely sufficient and cheaper for two people for the rest of the year.

Of course, with the caravan you have the advantage that you are flexible at your holiday destination and can only drive by car. That's correct. But we found a solution for ourselves, we take our Vespa with us on the camper and are therefore also flexible.
